🌿 Pai, Thailand: A Peaceful Island in the Mountains

After a week exploring Kanchanaburi, it was time for the journey north — an overnight mission that would eventually take us to the mountain town of Pai, a place we’d heard described as ā€œan island in the mountains.ā€ By the end of our stay, I understood exactly why.

šŸš The Long Road North

Leaving Kanchanaburi at 6pm, we braced ourselves for a long night on the bus. Between awkward seats, restless sleep, and surprise seat rearrangements, comfort was definitely not on the itinerary.

Exhaustion took over until finally, at 5:30am, the bus rolled into Chiang Mai. Bleary eyed and half awake, we grabbed our bags and set off in search of the connecting van to Pai.

Finding the right station was an adventure of its own — some wandering, a few wrong turns, and a long queue later, we secured tickets for the 6:30am van. I’d read about the 762 curves between Chiang Mai and Pai, and let me tell you, I felt every single one!

šŸŒž Arriving in Pai

By the time we arrived around 9:30am, we were equal parts exhausted and excited. Our guest house was just a fifteen minute walk away, thankfully with an early check in and a lovely surprise — a free breakfast at the cafĆ© across the road.

Scrambled eggs on toast and perfect bread revived me instantly, while Joe opted for fruit and yogurt. After breakfast, we took a slow wander through town to get our bearings. The centre of Pai is full of charm — narrow lanes, colourful cafĆ©s, and the hum of scooters mingling with mountain air.

We booked a local tour for the next day (500 baht including lunch and fees) before relaxing with fruit smoothies at a tiny cafƩ tucked behind the main street. When the skies opened and the rain poured down, it felt like the universe telling us to rest.

After a relaxing afternoon and a much needed nap, we headed out for dinner at Pai’s vibrant night market. Colourful stalls lined up with sizzling woks, handmade crafts, and the smell of fresh pad thai in the air. We joined a long queue at a popular stall run by a single, hard working chef — and it was so worth it. I had the pad thai, Joe had green curry, both made fresh to order and bursting with flavour.

šŸžļø Touring Pai’s Natural Beauty

After a restful night, our Pai adventure kicked off — eventually. Our van arrived 30 minutes late, but all was forgiven as we cruised through lush valleys toward our first stop, the White Buddha.

The climb to the top was steep and sweaty, but the panoramic view over Pai was breathtaking. From there, we stopped at a misty mountain viewpoint, where clouds danced low between the peaks and then continued to the highlight of the day — Tham Lod Cave.

Inside, our guide’s oil lamp lit the way through towering caverns of stalactites and stalagmites shaped like mythical creatures. We crossed an underground river on bamboo rafts and emerged to flocks of bats swooping near the cave’s open ends — eerie yet beautiful.

After a quick (and forgettable) lunch, we continued to the Mo Paeng Waterfall, glistening under steady rain. Swimming wasn’t allowed that day, but standing there, watching the cascade framed by jungle, it was easy to imagine how peaceful it must be in the sun.

Next came the Pai Hot Springs, where we dipped our toes in mineral rich water (a bit murky, but warm nonetheless), before heading to our final and favourite stop — Pai Canyon.

Climbing to the ridge, the canyon stretched across the valley in russet rock and golden light. Narrow trails snaked across sharp ledges and gaps, offering one jaw dropping view after another. It wasn’t the Grand Canyon, but it had its own rugged beauty — wild, intimate, and unforgettable.

šŸŒ™ Last Evening in Pai

That night we returned to our favourite food stall for one last feast, watching the chef flip noodles with skill and a smile. Afterward, we wandered through the night market again — fresh banana shakes, late night laughter and one final souvenir patch for the backpack.

We fell asleep early, bags packed for morning. Even before the alarm went off at 5:45am, I knew I’d miss this place — the quiet, the green hills, the way the mountains seemed to hold you in their arms.

The early van ride back to Chiang Mai was again full of curves, but also full of reflection.

šŸ’¬ Reflections on Pai

Pai feels like a secret — a little mountain paradise tucked between the bends. It’s small enough to wander yet vast in energy. CafĆ©s bloom out of every corner, mist hugs the hills in the early light, and the pace of life slows to something kinder.

If you’re traveling to northern Thailand and wondering whether the winding road is worth it — it absolutely is.
To travel is to live, and Pai is a reminder of both.

Thank you for following along on our mountain adventure! Pai truly captured my heart — the simplicity, the nature and the peace. Traveling here reminded me how sometimes the best parts of a journey come after the toughest roads (literally: 762 of them!).
